Apnea
Dr. Shweta Arora specializes in the diagnosis and management of sleep apnea, a condition characterized by frequent interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apneas, can last from a few seconds to minutes and occur multiple times throughout the night, leading to poor sleep quality, fatigue, and a range of health issues.

Sleep apnea is typically classified into two main types: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which occurs when the muscles in the throat relax and block the airway, and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), which results from a failure of the brain to signal the muscles responsible for breathing. Complex sleep apnea syndrome, also known as mixed sleep apnea, is a combination of both OSA and CSA.

Dr. Shweta Arora offers a comprehensive approach to diagnosing sleep apnea.

After a detailed consultation to assess symptoms, including loud snoring, choking during sleep, daytime fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, she may recommend a sleep study (polysomnography) to evaluate the frequency and severity of apneas during sleep. In some cases, at-home sleep testing may also be an option for convenience.

Once diagnosed, Dr. Arora provides personalized treatment plans to manage and treat sleep apnea effectively. For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, treatment often involves lifestyle changes, such as weight management, sleeping position adjustments, and avoiding alcohol or sedatives before bedtime. Dr. Arora may also recommend Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, where a machine delivers a constant flow of air through a mask to keep the airways open during sleep. For patients who do not tolerate CPAP or have severe cases, alternative treatments such as BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) or surgical interventions may be considered.

In addition to these treatments, Dr. Shweta Arora also educates patients on the importance of sleep hygiene and managing associated risk factors, such as obesity, smoking, or cardiovascular disease, which can exacerbate sleep apnea.

With a patient-centered approach, Dr. Arora ensures that those suffering from sleep apnea receive the care and support they need to achieve restful, uninterrupted sleep, improve overall health, and enhance their quality of life.
